-„Precisely 101 days after I broke my leg in Peru, I hiked Kasprowy Wierch. My leg is still bothering me a bit, but I’m back to the world of the living! – Rafał Sonik’s recent comments are filled with pride and joy. After a few months of rehabilitation, he is slowly regaining his full potential. The winner of the 2015 Dakar Rally is already getting ready for his first quad training after the break.
– The last time I climbed Kasprowy was on the 23rd of December, a day before the Christmas Eve. We were hiking in deep snow, thick fog, and a biting wind. Hiking that peak again, I felt like I had felt during my first Dakar Rally. I wasn’t quite sure if I would make it, so the satisfaction of reaching the top of the peak was even bigger – comments the famous Cracovian.
Hiking Kasprowy Wierch was an important and symbolic test for the quad rider. Since that day, along with his personal trainer, Karol Łakomiec, he has started to increase training load, complementing it with a stationary bike and an elliptical trainer workout. They have also started long, dynamic walks in Lasek Wolski and in the Błędowska Desert.
– Once we crossed the entire desert barefoot. I got a chance to experience my regular training grounds from a totally different perspective, and actually, training in the heat gave me a lot of joy.” – admitted „SuperSonik” after another training challenge.
The next step in the process of going back to shape is the June expedition to Sardinia, where Rafał Sonik will ride a road motorcycle. Shortly after, he is planning his first quad training. At the beginning of July, the Polish champion will decide if he is ready to compete in August rides, Atacama Rally and Desafio Ruta 40, or if he goes back to racing during the Morocco Rally in October.
